The most popular and well-known way to earn crypto is mining. When we hear the term “crypto mining,” we often imagine someone with a pickax digging until they strike ‘digital gold.’ Although the reality may not be the same, it’s not a million miles away from the truth.
Basics of mining
Mining is performed by high-powered computers called mining rigs that solve complex math problems.
What exactly happens when one is mining? Two things:

In particular, they make sure that transactions are not duplicated and the same crypto isn’t used twice. This is a unique quirk of cryptocurrencies called double-spending.
Verifying each crypto transaction requires a great deal of work from miners. As compensation for their efforts, miners are rewarded with the transaction fees for all transactions in the block they validated and some amount of newly mined coins. This amount depends on the cryptocurrency itself; for example, Bitcoin currently rewards miners with 6.25 Bitcoin (BTC) for each block.
How is the reward number calculated?
In the case of Bitcoin, the reward is halved every 210,000 blocks, roughly every 4 years. The reward went from 50 in 2009 to 25 in 2012, then to 12.5 in 2016. In 2020, it was halved again, and that’s what we’re left with — 6.25 BTC.
Bitcoin’s next halving is expected to happen in 2024. The last Bitcoin is predicted to be mined in 2140. Afterward, miners will only be rewarded with fees that network users will pay for processing transactions. These halvings also reduce the rate at which new coins are created, lowering the available supply. And this pushes the price higher.

Although there are many different methods of achieving consensus on a blockchain network, two of them stand out from the rest of the pack: Proof of Work (PoW) and Proof of Stake (PoS). They are incredibly popular and are used by most major cryptocurrencies.
Both of them are consensus algorithms used to solve math problems and come up with a 64-digit hexadecimal number called a hash.

Hexadecimal is made up of two Greek words, “hex” meaning 6 and “deca” meaning 10, giving us a total of 16 possibilities for each digit. However, in computing, the numeric system only offers us 10 ways to represent numbers (0 to 9), so the other 6 symbols are made up of letters, specifically a, b, c, d, e, and f.

PoW & PoS algorithms
The PoW model is used by Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, and Litecoin. It’s a mechanism that involves individuals, groups, and businesses competing with one another using high-powered computers, known as mining rigs, to be the first to solve complex math problems.
Hash rate, or the amount of guesses a rig can make per second, is vital for PoW mining. The miner that comes up with the first suitable hash will be allowed to mine the block, regardless of whether another miner comes up with one closer to the target hash later.
The main disadvantage of PoW is that it requires lots of electrical power. Large amounts of energy are necessary to power mining rigs; in some cases, the costs even outweigh the rewards.
Unlike the proof-of-work model, Proof of Stake doesn’t reward the fastest miners with high-powered mining rigs sucking up energy to validate transactions.
The higher the amount of a crypto you own, the more likely you are to be selected.
Those who are chosen don’t receive a block reward once they’ve completed the block. Instead, they are given combined transaction fees.
